I flew from Kathmandu to Japiur and spent a couple days there, and now I’m in Udaipur. Both cities are in Rajasthan in northwest India. I took what was planned to be an overnight train from Jaipur to Udaipur. It was scheduled for 10:25 pm, but didn’t arrive until 6:10 am, so I spent the night with hundreds of others camped out in the train station. There’s a special waiting room for passengers with the more expensive “AC” and “Sleeper” tickets. When I arrived there were no more seats, though I eventually got one. The locals know enough to bring…

I made it back to Kathmandu after a quick couple days in Chitwan National Park. This morning I rode an elephant around the jungle, and yesterday saw some rhinos on a jeep safari. I have a bunch of photos to upload, but haven’t had any time to go through them. Stay tuned. Tomorrow I’m flying to Jaipur, India. From there I’ll make my way to Udaipur and Dehli. I hope everyone has made it through the storm okay. It sounds like a mess.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I’ve been trying to take full advantage of my time here. Most days that has meant being out on the streets shooting by 5:30am, and crashing at about 9 at night, without much in the way of downtime in between. I’ve taken more than 6000 pictures so far, though the majority of them will be deleted, partly because I’ve been shooting from moving buses or pushing the limits of the camera by shooting before the sun comes up or after it goes down. I arrived at Kathmandu this afternoon. The flights and layovers and everything went smoothly, and my hosts are terrific. I had a chance to walk around Bhaktapur for a couple hours and took a few photos. Right now I’m looking forward to a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow morning I head to Pokhara. Update: I’ve uploaded a couple photos from the plane over Kathmandu.

This coming Friday I’ll be heading to Nepal and India. My friend Anuj grew up in Bhaktapur near Kathmandu, and he’ll be home visiting while I’m there so we should be able to travel around a bit together. The first part of the trip I’ll be in Nepal, mainly around Kathmandu and Pokhara, and toward the end I’ll be able to travel in northern India around New Delhi and maybe Rajasthan. I should be able to post some photos during the trip.

This weekend I walked around the Rodder’s Journal Revival at Pimlico Race Course. It had a really good turnout.

On Saturday, I had a chance to shoot some photos at a terrific concert at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore. I never really shot a concert before, but it was a lot of fun. Thanks to all the musicians and to the Creative Alliance for putting on a truly great show.

I’ve been working in the darkroom with lith printing. By messing with the the type of paper and the developer dilution and development time, the color and the balance between the shadows and mid-tones can be manipulated. These are printed on black and white paper from black and white negatives.

I’m up in Ithaca for a conference at Cornell. It’s a beautiful place, and I’ve had some time to walk around and take some photos.
